The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, released in July 2024, continues Samsung’s tradition of high-end foldable phones, boasting several improvements in design, performance, and productivity features.
Design and Build:
The Z Fold 6 is slightly more compact and lighter than its predecessor, weighing 239 grams (compared to 252g for the Z Fold 5). It’s also 1.3mm thinner when folded, improving portability. Samsung has refined the phone’s design with straighter lines and enhanced durability, including a new dual-rail hinge and a sturdier aluminum frame. The device is available in colors like Navy, Pink, Silver Shadow, with exclusive hues such as Crafted Black and White available online.
Display:
The Z Fold 6 sports a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display with a resolution of 2160×1856, maintaining the same size as the Z Fold 5 but with a new aspect ratio for better usability. It supports a variable refresh rate from 1 to 120Hz for smooth scrolling and gaming. The cover screen has been increased to 6.3 inches, offering a more comfortable experience when the phone is folded.
Performance:
Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, optimized specifically for Galaxy devices, the Z Fold 6 delivers a 14% CPU boost and 25% better graphics compared to its predecessor. It features 12GB of RAM, and storage options range from 256GB to 1TB, although there’s no microSD slot for expansion. The enhanced cooling system, featuring a 1.6x larger vapor chamber, ensures efficient heat management during intense tasks like gaming.
Cameras:
The camera setup includes a 50MP primary sensor, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom. Although the hardware is similar to the Z Fold 5, software enhancements through Samsung’s ProVision AI improve image quality, especially in low-light conditions. There are also 10MP and 4MP cameras for selfies and video calls on the cover and main displays, respectively.
Software and Features:
Running Android 14 with Samsung’s One UI 6.1.1, the Z Fold 6 includes various AI-driven tools such as Note Assist for meeting transcriptions, and PDF translations. Samsung’s AI also powers features like the Samsung Keyboard’s Composer, which can assist with writing emails based on keywords. Integration with Google’s Gemini AI provides additional smart assistance across apps.
Battery and Charging:
The 4,400mAh battery remains unchanged, but the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s efficiency should slightly extend battery life. It supports 25W wired charging, capable of a 50% charge in 30 minutes, alongside 15W wireless and 4.5W reverse wireless charging for powering accessories like earbuds.
Price:
The Z Fold 6 starts at $1,899 for the base model with 256GB of storage, and goes up to $2,199 for the 1TB variant.
While the Z Fold 6 represents incremental improvements over its predecessor, it continues to lead in the foldable market with its robust design, enhanced software tools, and impressive display technology. However, some users might find the camera upgrades underwhelming given the phone’s premium price tag.
