Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Sons and one of India’s most influential industrialists, passed away on October 9, 2024, at the age of 86. He had been undergoing treatment at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital due to health issues, including a sudden drop in blood pressure. Tata had been in the hospital’s ICU for several days before his death.

His passing marks the end of an era for Indian business, as Ratan Tata was instrumental in transforming the Tata Group into a global conglomerate. During his leadership from 1991 to 2012, the company expanded internationally with major acquisitions such as Jaguar Land Rover, Corus Steel, and Tetley Tea. His commitment to ethical business practices and philanthropy earned him widespread respect both in India and globally.
Ratan Tata was also a prominent philanthropist, known for his work in education, healthcare, and rural development. His contributions through Tata Trusts have significantly impacted millions of lives across various sectors.
In honor of his contributions, the Maharashtra government declared a day of mourning and announced that he would be accorded a state funeral. His body was placed at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai for the public to pay their respects before his cremation.
